Despite CCSS’s complex content and skills, we often use grading practices that combine achievement, effort, participation, behavior, and attendance into a single letter, allowing so much variability and subjectivity that a student’s grade becomes difficult to understand (What does a “B” mean?), less reflective of a student’s performance than of which teacher she has, and inadvertently stacks the deck against our most vulnerable students. Yet we depend on grades for crucial decisions—promotion and retention, allocation of supports, athletic eligibility, graduation, and post-secondary admission.

Attendees will learn how improving grading practices can reduce failure rates and dramatically enhance teaching and learning. Participants will:
1) Explore specific practices that make grades more accurate and fair, and that strengthen student ownership and positive learning relationships with teachers;
2) Learn how another district improved grading practices to leverage significant changes in policy, teacher practices, and student outcomes;
3) Learn some effective strategies to open a productive dialogue about grading in their schools
